October 22, 2024 – Davidson-Davie Community College’s horticulture program enrolls participants year-round at the Davidson Correctional Center for job skills development. Recently, current participants in
the program won numerous 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons for their entries at this year’s Davidson County Agricultural Fair. Student entries included various ornamental potted plants and cut flowers, in addition to several varieties of fruits and vegetables. Students were commended by local area Master Gardener Volunteers for their hard work and efforts in producing some remarkable entries!
This is the second year that horticulture students at the correctional center have competed at the Davidson County Agricultural Fair. “It is a good experience for the students and provides a way that they can engage with the community”, says course instructor Lane Cox. “The guys really enjoy participating in the fair and I think that it gives them a sense of accomplishment and re-connection”.
The horticulture program offered at the correctional center by Davidson-Davie is a job skills development program that prepares students for future careers in the horticulture industry. Students receive professional instruction in plant propagation, greenhouse & nursery operations, pest management, landscape design & maintenance, vegetable production and hydroponics. The horticulture program has been offered at Davidson Correctional since the late 1980’s and has provided valuable horticultural job skills training to hundreds of students.
